Beyond the 4th wall

One of Orson Welles' favorite tools to check if a scene was working properly was to ask the actors to play it in front of him while he... closed his eyes! Imagine the artists' faces!
And if what he heard annoyed him, it meant that the scene had not yet reached the level he wanted.

Curious? Strange?
Not at all!
In doing so, he was applying what communication sciences have discovered about the benefits of changing frames of reference, both in rehearsal and in performance.

But, as we all know, it is not always easy to take a step back when it comes to a show to which one devotes all one's soul, time and energy. And sometimes even all your money...
